What is the IELTS Test?

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a globally recognized standardized test that measures the English language proficiency of non-native speakers. It is widely accepted by universities, employers, and immigration authorities in countries where English is the primary language.

IELTS Test Formats:

  1. IELTS Academic:
    • For individuals seeking higher education or professional registration.
    • Focuses on formal, academic language and topics.
  2. IELTS General Training:
    • For those migrating to English-speaking countries or applying for jobs or training programs.
    • Tests everyday communication skills.

Structure of the IELTS Test:

The test is divided into four sections to assess different language skills.

1. Listening (30 minutes):

  • Format: Four recordings, including conversations and monologues.
  • Question Types: Multiple-choice, matching, map/diagram labeling, form completion, etc.
  • Content: Everyday contexts and academic settings.
  • Skills Assessed: Understanding main ideas, specific information, opinions, and speakers’ attitudes.

2. Reading (60 minutes):

  • Format:
    • Academic: Three long passages from books, journals, or articles.
    • General Training: Texts from notices, advertisements, and general interest topics.
  • Question Types: True/False/Not Given, matching headings, sentence completion, etc.
  • Skills Assessed: Comprehension, identifying details, and recognizing writers’ opinions and arguments.

3. Writing (60 minutes):

  • Tasks:
    • Task 1:
      • Academic: Describe a graph, chart, map, or diagram.
      • General Training: Write a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal).
    • Task 2: Write an essay presenting an argument or discussing a topic.
  • Skills Assessed: Grammar, vocabulary, task response, coherence, and cohesion.

4. Speaking (11–14 minutes):

  • Format: A face-to-face interview with an examiner.
  • Structure:
    • Part 1: Introduction and personal questions.
    • Part 2: A short speech on a given topic (cue card).
    • Part 3: A discussion related to the Part 2 topic.
  • Skills Assessed: Fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.

Test Delivery Modes:

  1. Paper-Based IELTS:
    • Answers written on paper.
    • Speaking conducted face-to-face.
  2. Computer-Based IELTS:
    • Answers typed on a computer.
    • Speaking remains face-to-face or via video.
  3. IELTS for UKVI:
    • For visa applications to the UK.
  4. IELTS Life Skills:
    • For specific immigration or citizenship purposes.

Duration:

  • Total time: 2 hours and 45 minutes (excluding breaks).
  • Listening, Reading, and Writing are conducted in one sitting.
  • Speaking is scheduled separately on the same or a different day.
